Because the organ has traditionally been the principal instrument used in the church, music written for the organ has been influenced by what was at any given time desired and accepted in the church room. Music history has placed the manifold expressions of music in distinct boxes. Gradually, the walls of these boxes have grown thinner, and various styles have gained more
openness toward each other. This is also the case in the church room.

These organ pieces are the result of a desire to let the organ's unique character come to light in music inspired by blues.

Blues is music characterized by so-called blue notes and the frequently used twelve-bar
structure. Blues originated in African American communities in the South of the United States
in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. Few characteristics are common for all blues, as the genre is largely formed by the individual musician's approach. Certain features have
nevertheless been constant.
Why blues in the cathedral?
We get what we expect in the cathedral. Tone, timbre and rhythm draw us in to an experience of
sublimity, of the mystery of the suffering Christ who died and who lives. The oratorio, the Kyrie,
the Gloria, and organ music in the musical clothing of tradition are alive in the cathedral.

The slaves in the United States lived their lives on endless fields, bound to a life in degradation.
There, sweating out their longing for freedom and human worth, they called out their songs of lament to the only one who listened and suffered with them: The Lord Jesus Christ! From these fields, a unique type of music grew, with colors from their home, Africa, and the
new world where they had now been planted. The music of the cathedral was not their own, but
in blues their hearts found tones that were genuine to them.
Beneath the fields' endless sky, beneath the high ceiling of the cathedral, God is present for all
who call out their misery and despair to him!

Interpretation
All organs are different. So are we! And music is performed on all sorts of occasions. It is therefore up to the individual performer to interpret with freedom and intuition.
Suggested registrations, tempi and dynamics are to be treated with imaginative discretion.
The accompanying cd is only intended as a guide, in order to give an impression of the music.
