A beautiful and remarkable poem from William Blake’s ”Songs of Innocence and Experience”, 1789.
The composer says:
The lyrics of William Blake have been set to music by countless composers. I couldn’t help giving it a try myself. His poems have a rhythm and a narrative that give me associations to sounds and tonal lines.
The indignation expressed in this particular poem about how a man’s right to express himself is blocked by the church and the authorities, is an act of bravery worthy of consideration – and the theme is certainly relatable in our time as well.
